Mallow Technologies Private Limited , an iOS, Android and Web app development company located in Karur, were on the process of expanding their team. They opted to hire developers through campus recruitment from some of the reputed institutes in south of Tamil Nadu. As, campus recruitment is the best option to meet fresh budding talents, all at a single place.

For the past two years, they have hired developers from 10 colleges, in and around cities of Karur, Madurai, Erode, Salem, Trichy, Sathy and Coimbatore. The hiring process would go on for about two months. During these times, it was a tough job to assign responsibilities to various technical people.

Problem

As a growing organization Mallow is keen on recruiting readily employable candidates. They wanted the recruits to start coding right from the day of joining. Mallow wanted to test the coding skills of the candidate more than any other thing. And having a different method for hiring (they don’t not conduct Aptitude and Group discussion rounds) by selecting candidates based on their coding skill, Mallow had to prepare different questions and test cases for each college.

The hiring process consists of various rounds and the short listed candidates are called for personal interview. Now, some of the major issues faced during the process was, hindrance in their regular project work and the process was time consuming and tiring. Using the working hours of the technical resources costs a lot man hours, reducing productivity.

Process

For the 2016 passed out students, Mallow conducted campus interviews in four major campuses. In each campus, the participants were around 200. It took a whole day to complete the process in each college. And to manage the process, 8 - 10 technical people, went to each drive. Preparation of questions, rounds and so on, started two months before the drive date. Since each drive was conducted on separate dates, there was a chance of the questions being available to the rest of the colleges. So, the team had to change the questions for each drive. Since the company emphasised on hiring coders it made the process even more stringent. During the drive they have to manually check the program outputs of each candidate and that consumed a lot of time. This campus drive took around 2 months to complete, among the 800+ candidates attended, 23 were offered the job.

Solution

This year the drive for recruiting 2017 passing out students, Mallow with the help of CodeKalam conducted campus interviews at 7 colleges on the same day. And the time consumed for preparing the questions was just an one time job. Three people went to each college to assist and clear doubts during the process. This was just to ensure that the process was going smooth and to report to the monitoring team back at their office, in case of any technical issues.

The process at all the 7 colleges, started at the exact time and around 1000 candidates were taking the tests using CodeKalam. Once the candidates finished the first round, shortlisting the top candidates for the second round didn’t even take an hour to complete. All they have to do is, set a cut-off mark and based on it, CodeKalam platform shortlisted the candidates and provided the list.

The shortlisted candidates were given access to the second contest, which too took place at the same time at all the 7 campuses. After the completion of the second contest, the candidates shortlisted by the cut-off mark were called for direct interview to the company the next day.

Result

The process completed before end of the day and all of the employees were able to resume their work on the very next day.

And for the interview, only four technical people were needed to assess the candidates from all the seven campus combined. Mallow Technologies reduced their placement drive from around 2 months to 2 days and reduced their hiring cost by about 60% with the help of CodeKalam.
